Celeste tells us how it is as a young entrepreneur - and that you CAN do it too!

One of the hardest things about not being 45 years old with a beer belly and a hairy chest is the fact that we don’t have that confidence, that sense of self that comes with being on the planet for..well 45 years!

Confidence like that means that big things like having a fully fledge career, your own business, your own enterprise don’t feel as big as they do when you’re young.

But the best thing is that not only do you have youth in your favour with a lack of beer belly and frightening mortgages but just because you’re not middle ages doesn’t mean you can’t run your own enterprise!

She’s 21 and started The 12th Estate. We asked her to tell us more…

What is the 12th Estate?

The 12th Estate is a networking group for young women who are interested in the creative and media industries. We put on panel and workshop events that encourage pratical thinking and conversations around the young womens careers and community.

How did you come up with the idea?

I first came up with the idea when I started my role as editor at Live Magazine. I realised that even though I was meeting lots of other girls with similar ambitions as me, no one was really helping each other to fulfill them and who knew exactly what it was like to be a young women in these industries.

What has been your biggest challenge in starting up something yourself?
Time! Everyone on the team has to balance their everday workload around the project which can be difficult. But we’re very understanding of what each other has to do.

Tell us your best moment with 12th Estate?

The best moment is having someone say to you that they have heard of our event and they want to get involved. That always puts a smile on my face.

Do you have any advice for other young people who might be considering starting up themselves?

When working with bigger companies always make sure you keep your brand identity intact and do not be afraid of walking away if an opportunity does not fit what your company is about.

State of the Nation: Youth Club Closes and a Youth Shelter is Restored…

Across the UK we are witnessing businesses going into administration, high streets full of empty shop fronts and derelict buildings. Cuts are happening everywhere and everywhere you can see their impact. So it made us sad to see another victim of this difficult time.

Barnsley has recently felt this sting. Bank End Youth Club that attracted 20 young people three times a week has closed it’s services due to the expense of the building renovation.

The area now worries about an increased crime rate. How do you feel about that? Do you think a closure of a youth club would make young people be more inclined to get in to trouble?

Insp Julie Mitchell has made plans to walk the young people down to Hunningley Lane Youth Club when Bank End Youth Club closes for good.

More on the positive angle Somerton in Somerset have finally got the shelter they needed for the skate park at Somerton Recreation Ground. After a 6 month delay due to manufacture issues the structure is now ready to shelter young people from the weather while hanging out outside.

7 Ways to Find Your Passions, Pursuits, and Paths!

Hundreds of young people come to somewhereto_ because they have a passion, a vision or a talent but nowhere to express it or realise it. somewhereto_ spend hours in negotiation with people behind the empty shops, little known studios, that free desk space or that gap on the radio! Little by little these young people are matched to those spaces and amazing things happen. Live art installations, new businesses, theatrical rehearsals, training for sports, film sets, dance flash mobs. All of these young people get the voice of youth out there and championing young talent!

Exciting!

The thing is, these young people who know exactly what they love, who know exactly what they want to do; they’re not the majority here. Where you find one seventeen year old with their life mapped out, you will find four looking confused and feeling overwhelmed. We understand this. It can take people years to figure out who they are and make their mark on this little planet.

We don’t want you confused looking, overwhelmed young people to miss out though. Which is why we’ve created the Gangnam Style of Guides, the Crème de la Crème of Coaching, the…. Well Ok, the Top 10 Tips to Identify your Identity, Pick up your Passions and Target those Talents. Somewhereto_ figure out YOU!

1. What did you love as a child?

It could be the smallest thing but even down to that memory of making flapjack with your grandma might remind you that you love to bake. That rush you got from cycling down hills really fast, or getting creative with the sequins and PVA glue.

2. Imagine you’ve won the lottery

There’s a lot to be said for taking money out of the equation. We’re not saying that you can’t live like it’s no object or that you should rack up debt but it can help to define what you love without financial pressures dictating your choices. Then you can always save up!

3. Chat to the people who know you

You’d never know what you’d look like without a mirror. Your true friends are your life mirrors! They’ll be able to give you feedback on what they see in you that you may not see in yourself.

4. Find someone you aspire to

It doesn’t matter who or why. It could be someone you know, someone you met once or someone you’ve only heard of. They may have a character trait that you’d like to emulate or a skill you would love to have. They may just have an outlook on life that you would one day like to be able to have too. Regardless, it can be the thing that spurs you on and gives you that focus.

5. What are you good at?

The likelihood is if you’re good at it then you probably enjoy it. It doesn’t need to be a school topic, it could be that you’re good in a crowd, bringing people together, or that you really enjoy taking photos when you’re out or on holiday. Something as seemingly insignificant as that might develop into leading a gig-night or starting up your own theatre group or entering a photography competition!

6. Go for it!

So much of what holds us back is ourselves. Figure out what it is that means you haven’t gone for something before and then really question what it is that would be so bad if you did it. The funny thing is, is that it probably isn’t that bad at all.

7. You’ve figured it out but you don’t know where you’d be able to do it?

You want to practice your newfound basketball obsession but there’re no ball games allowed where you live and no basketball teams? You’ve realised you’d love to write a blog but don’t know where to start? There’s a passion growing for a support group you want to start for that one experience you had and want to turn into something positive but need a venue to meet in confidence? Neighbours keep complaining of the noise everytime you practice with your band? Keep falling into the wardrobe each time you practice your routines?

On Tuesday afternoon we continued our Cultural Olympiad adventures, by  partipating in Arts in Parliament, an innovative and exciting initiative being run by Parliament this summer to promote not only youth arts and culture, but also encourage more youth engagement with politics.

How you ask? By holding all of the events in the 900 year old splendour of Westminster Hall. The usual reserved hush was replaced by the gravity defying stunts of parkour crew Apeuro, the sweet vocals of Dionne Reid and Twelve Strings, the mind-blowing spoken word of Nichol Keene and Toby de Angeli, the blazing street dance of Aim High Dance crew and the beautiful live art performance by Graffiti Life artists Adam, Hannah and Tom.

Watch this space for more details from the day, but in the meantime, enjoy the snaps from the incredible day!

Our guest blogger Ryan Curtis is back with his third blog post about his somewhereto_  film project, Impact. Read on to find out about his ups and downs in trying to create his very own film festival

Developing Impact- Making it Happen

After a good few weeks of just solid thinking we finally had a strong idea, all we had to do now was make it happen. As a somewhereto_project, Impact was going to be run as a non-profit organisation. As a non-profit I knew we would have to rely heavily on external resources and call in A LOT of favours.

It was apparent to us that there was a few things that were going to be needed if this as ever going to become an annual event. Firstly we needed a venue, this would need to be somewhere easily accessible, appealing to our target audience and just the right size; with a little help from Rebecca and our own student knowledge we knew it had to be Hyde Park Picture House, as this iconic venue ticked all the boxes.

Next was the documentary films that were to be entered by the many talented film makers around Yorkshire, but just how do we go about getting their attention? Well, we simply had to take advantage of the connections and knowledge we already had, one by one we contacted every University in Yorkshire letting their film courses know about Impact Yorkshire; and how they could and, more importantly, why they should get involved. Although I found myself doing this a lot during this experience as my first event ,it’s safe to say waiting on submissions to come in was where I found myself bricking it the most, however we did get what we needed and more with interest from Canada and a submission from Prague!

Lastly as the event was going to be competition based we needed credible judges, this hands down required the most work in terms of countless emails and asking friends of friends of friends…of friends, but eventually this was achieved, of course not without the expected last minute madness that seems to happen so often with planning.

But there we had it, the essentials for what would make Impact Yorkshire. A fun, exciting, interesting yet extremely stressful experience that had taught me great deal and this was just the half of it.

The film embedded in this blog is a really interesting doc/drama submitted to the festival, it is based completely on real events and aims to create awareness around knife crime in youths. Enjoy.

So gang, as you know, we have been scouring the land, looking high and low in search of the biggest show offs in the land! Last week our valiant quest took us to Belfast, where we joined by Britain’s Got Talent star Ryan O’Shaughnessy, who performed a few sets before inviting local talent to the stage. Enjoy the highlights vid, and don’t forget that there are only 5 days left until the closing date of the show off competition, which you can enter here:  http://bit.ly/MhxqUo

Just submit a 60 sec clip of you showing off your skills by the 18th July, good luck!

You know how much the somewhereto_crew has been completely bitten by the Olympic bug?

Well, just when we thought we couldn’t possibly get any more excited about the Games, our long time friend, the lovely Celeste Houlker was announced as a torch bearer!

Last week, she sojourned to the rather random destination of Chesterfield ( Celeste, editor of the super amazing Live Magazine, is from London) where she took centre stage as she multi-tasked with aplomb: waving at the crowds, holding the torch without dropping it, and having a mighty good time brightening up the day with her winning smile.

Check out her pics from the day, and watch this space for Celeste’s own personal account of her Olympiad adventure. Celeste, you’ve done us all proud lady!

Check out our earlier post about equally amazing torchbearer, Belinda , who ran with the torch after getting in touch with her regional co-ordinator. Need some where to do your thing? Look no further than us space champions at somewhereto_.

If only there was an Olympic space finding race ….alas, get in touch with us today!
